The southernmost island of the Golden Isles, Jekyll Island was purchased in 1886 by a group of wealthy families as a private retreat. By 1900, The Jekyll Island Club membership included the Rockefellers, Morgans, Cranes and Goulds and represented over one-sixth of the world’s wealth. The Club closed in 1942 and Jekyll Island was purchased by the State of Georgia in 1947.

For photographers, start with an incredible sunrise on Driftwood Beach, capture the architecture of the grand houses of previous residents, then photograph a traditional croquet match on the historical hotel lawn.   Jekyll Island also offers one of the best bike paths in the area.

There is a $6 per car entrance fee at the entry to the island.

Moderate priced hotels (Holiday Inn, Quality, Westin, and Hampton) plus camping available on the island.

It is 65 miles from the Jacksonville airport to the Jekyll airport which is approximately a one hour and 10 minute drive.

WHAT  EQUIPMENT  SHOULD  I  BRING ?

A tripod and your favorite zoom lens.   All types of photography possible on the island.

A hat, sunscreen and water are good to carry.

The bike trails along the ocean and through the island fauna are an easy ride and offer great photo ops.   Bring a bike.
