On November 12 the Jacksonville Camera Club sponsored an onsite presentation/workshop of the Florida Camera Club Council’s photography judging program. The program is titled Education and Judge Certification Program.
The program was presented in two parts: Part I – Making Winning Images and Part II — Scoring and Critiquing Images. Attendance at both sections was limited.
The sessions cost (with lunch) $30 for Part I or $50 for all day. Both were taught by Christine Cook of F3C.
Further details on this program and the instructor is available on the F3C website.
The material will be taught again in future webinars.
Hi Folks,
I told you I would send a list of some contests and shows to give you an idea of the possibilities. If you get this going and need advise or whatever, you know where to find me!
Christine
From Participant…..I thought the workshop was excellent! The morning one was very good, and the afternoon one was fabulous. Christine was one of the best presenters we’ve had. I did wish, afterwards, that the afternoon portion could have been stretched out to cover a full day. The other two people in my car pool also agreed. I would love to have had more examples. Is there any chance you can get her back to talk more about judging?
Comments from various attendees…webmaster
Dr. Christine Cook is a very nice person and competent program presenter.
I learned that S3C does not use PSA recommendations for judging: our Club does adhere to these as does the Glennie Salon in which we participate.
There is no nature division so that nature pictures are placed into Color or Monochrome and therefore are not judged from the PSA guidelines.
In the training we are asked to give points to Impact, Composition and Technical Aspects. It would be great if we got the judges feedback: but we don’t. In actuality it works like this: Three judges are looking at hundreds of pictures and within a few seconds determine a combined score. In my own training and judging hundreds (maybe thousands) of pictures I have learned to make very quick analysis and to try to determine if there may be ways to make improvements –if needed or possible.
I do think it will provide valuable help for our members who want to learn more about judging. From my point of view I may be too critical to be an effective judge for S3C so most likely will opt out from training.
The program was very well planned and the luncheon was great. It took a lot of work from our crew.

the workshop: it seemed a bit basic, though it’s often good to review the basics. Only 3 years ago much of her presentation would have been big news to me. If she is in charge of F3C Digital Competitions, I’m amazed I have won any blue ribbons there because her taste is so different from mine. That speaks well for her. I hate soft milky water!

I enjoyed the talk by Dr Cook who is clearly a tomb of knowledge and experience
She also has a huge ego which actually is a plus
I will certainly be criticizing my competition pictures in a different way
I would welcome any useful session such as use of flash, depth of focus techniques etc
Thanks again for organizing it and working so hard on Saturday

Overall the judging workshop met the objective of teaching us the judging method used by the F3C.

I think the judging criteria as written were a little misleading (e.g. definition of focus and center of interest), but Christine’s understanding became clear as we went along. Also there are compositional criteria beyond the rule of thirds that can be valuable in understanding what makes a good image.
I think the definition of Impact leads to a particular style that is not necessarily classic IMHO, but as least it is clear what F3C are looking for and how images are scored.
The format and method of the class was very good. I can see this type of workshop used for other topics from how to use a post-processing tool, develop an online-portfolio or create a particular type of image (e.g. composite, macro or abstract).
Before folks complete the judging assignment that I assume Christine will be sending out, I recommend that they take a few minutes to study the images from past F3C competitions on the F3C website.

I enjoyed the morning session. Yes, more workshops. How about one on lighting and flash photography? Thanks.

I would love a workshop on lenses. I like the format, the time frame and the speaker!

Great workshop. Well thought out and delivered. I liked the audience involvement and Dr. Cook offered a thorough look at the subject, I wish it could have gone on longer.
I think, speaking for myself, but I know others, we could always use Lightroom and/or photoshop workshops, but many of us do not have lap tops. So not sure how complete or satisfying it could be.

Yes, absolutely i would like to see more workshops. any workshop that results in knowledge improvement is a good workshop. a workshop about different camera lenses and their impact could be interesting, black and white photography
I have never been in Ravines Garden in Palatka, but I heard it’s pretty. I have wondered if it could be a nice outing destination?________________________________________
Thanks to you Jan and all the others involved who worked so hard to make this workshop successful. I have no criticisms of Dr. Cook or the JCC organization. I found Dr. Cook’s presentation to be both entertaining and informative and I look forward to more workshops at JCC. ________________________________________
I was grateful for the hourly breaks, as apparently were many of our fellow attendees. The coffee and donuts in the morning were a treat. While I try to eschew sweets I am a coffee-holic. The lunch was quite delightful.
Finally, my life this last 6 months have been a bit chaotic but I’m looking at more free time in 2017. If any volunteers are needed for future events please let me know. I can’t promise to always raise my hand but I will certainly try.
Again – thanks to all the JCC folks who made the workshop possible.
