Lodging

Hotels will fill quickly as we get closer to warm weather, and they can be very expensive in Tampa-St Pete.  La Qunita is a moderately-priced chain that is usually satisfactory for most people. They have 4 locations in  St Petersburg/Clearwater and one of the 7 Tampa locations is in the southwest part of Tampa. Prices and amenities vary somewhat, so be sure of what you are getting. Trip Advisor lists several recommended motels in the area for under $200 per night (January prices!).

Directions

Via US 301 and I-75 it is 3 1/2 to 4 hours to the Tampa Bay Automobile Museum - an arbitrary spot at 3301 Gateway Centre Blvd, Pinellas Park. This is off of I-275 on the St Petersburg side of the bay.  You should pick your lodging based on amenities and price, and also on the attractions where you expect to spend your time. If that is beaches and birding maybe you would stay in St Pete; if it is historic buildings, museums and mainland attractions you might want to be in Tampa.
